Works as expected

I picked this set up to add some sound to a halloween prop. I have it serial connected to an Arduino Nano so that I can motion activate it with a PIR sensor. I was able to find simple code online and everything worked as expected. This one uses 3v logic, so I had to use a resistor, but that's pretty well documented. Also, I believe these only support 3W speakers directly, but for my use case that was fine. I did find that I did not have to rename my .mp3 file to a number, but I only have one file I'm playing when motion triggers. Overall, very happy.

RX (dfplayer) goes to TX (pico, etc) and visa versa

Looking back this was a dumb move, but I don't usually work with uart. I was banging my head because the dfplayer wasn't working. Until I switch my rx/tx. I thought like other devices same pin names connect to eachother. I am putting this review up to save time and pain for other dummies like me. This player does as advertised.

Plays fairly well

For fun, I wired the DAC ports to a powered desktop speaker system and it sounded great, although that's how I intend to use it. I'm driving a small 3W 4Ohm speaker from this, and I really don't need to put it to full volume to get decent sound for my "effects" files. On the software side, I found that depending on the "track completion" message through the serial port was problematic due to conflicts with other components, so I just use the BUSY pin to determine when a track has completed. My one real gripe is that the chip does not remember its last volume setting when re-started, so it always initializes at full volume which draws a lot of power...

Just does nothing

Tried different wiring and nothing on this works. Used the exact same wiring on an authentic DFRobot DFPlayer and it functions correctly. This is a waste of money.

They work, but take aspirin first

Ordered two, and received two that work. Documentation is scanty, but is out there. It does take some effort and research to get something going that is fun and useful.

Quick and inexpensive way to add MP3 playback to any project.

What I like about this "DFplayer" is that I can set it up in standalone mode. It has speaker outputs for small loads, and also has stereo pre-amp/earphone outputs. This small project is simply going to be a "sleep machine" that I can load with my own sounds. One button (ground to IO1) is "Previous" (momentary) and "Volume Down" (if the button is held down.) Another button (ground to IO2) is "Next" (momentary) and "Volume Up" (if the button is held down.) The last button is from ADKEY1 to ground through a 33K ohm resistor for "Pause/Play." Give it 5 volts, and you are good to go!The player also has an interface for serial comms, (TX, RX and BUSY) so it is Arduino ready, and there seems to be a fairly robust library for it. I believe the board is looking for 3.3v levels on the comm pins, so level shifting may be needed.Be aware that the files on the SD card (formatted as FAT32) need to be labeled as 0001.mp3, 0002.mp3, and so forth. There can be folders, and quite a few files, but that's overkill for what I needed.I think this would make a great soundboard, and there is some decent (not great) documentation for it. For the price, this thing is versatile and effective, and I recommend it. Knocking off a star because the documentation is spotty-good for some parts and really not helpful for other things.

Fun, easy to use and high quality

The media could not be loaded.  These are well made units. The standalone ability needs only power, the speaker wires plugging in and a wire to touch the playback pin. More advanced projects can be achieved readily, with several Arduino microcontroller libraries being available to use with them. Playback of up to 3000 different MP3's at up to 48kHz must surely be decent enough specs for any project! One thing to watch out for, is that (in my case anyway) there wasn't enough power from the Arduino to run the speaker at full volume. It makes sense, see the video for volume output! It's wise to run the module from its own 5V feed, rather than have an Arduino supply the power. All in all, great fun and certainly recommended. Shipping was in 2 days, as described.

Useful mp3 module for electronics projects

These tiny modules are very useful for a range of projects and can easily be connected to the Arduino or other microcontrollers. There is plenty of information available on how to set these up either as stand alone mp3 players or with other devices. The player even has a built in amp (3W) so it can be connected directly to a single speaker and stereo line out is also supported.
