Best Description of Shamatha Meditation
This book is amazing. I'm buying two more copies, because I know I'm going to give some away. It has the most comprehensive description of shamatha (calming/quiescence meditation) that I have come across. It is unique in some ways, for example, the warnings of things you might encounter in advanced practice. The author's experience really shows through in this regard. The explanation of meditation on the Four Immeasurable Minds (brahma-viharas), i.e., Love, Compassion, Sympathetic Joy, and Equanimity, is also excellent. Guided meditations are given in the text. This book would be suitable for practitioners of any level (unless they were already comfortable with the jhanas) who are serious about meditation.
