Good printer, fingers may need to be crossed when setting up
Printer good, setup was a pain. Last night the setup program wouldn't acknowledge my printer, even though I uninstalled the old printer. The setup program did however install some drivers causing more problems. Today I went into the registry to remove all printer information from initial setup and older printers, restarted my computer again, and rebooted my router. After that, the setup program installed properly, but still wasn't an easy process. To print both sides, I needed the official setup program. Otherwise, it just printed on one side of paper. Fortunately, all seems good now with the printer program offering the print options as designed. I moved away from inkjet to laser. I'll never own an inkjet printer again.

Goodbye Color Ink Drama, Hello Sanity
Excellent. This mother (I mean Brother) prints clean, fast, and lasts! As a student, I just needed something reliable. This printer delivered. I’ve owned A LOT of printers over the past 20 years. I’ve tried all the brands and they all had their own issues: usually fine for as year or two then… a slow sad whimpering death: the ink ran out too fast, the ink heads were misaligned, ink refills were expensive, knockoff cartridges either didn’t work or weren’t recognized, print would default to color so my color ink drained to fast… it was just a pain in the butt! This one? No stress. Boring black and white? Nah… CONSISTENT AND RELIABLE black and white!! I don’t even miss color. If I ever need it, FedEx has my back. The toner lasts forever and everything just works. What a game changer.Bottom line: Solid, smart, and stress-free. Best printer I’ve owned.

Buyer Beware!!!!
Let me tell you first off, I have absolutely NO complaints about this printer. The printing is sharp enough for me and meets my needs. I actually bought another Brother printer a couple of months after this, but not the exact model as I wanted something a little less expensive. Now to the reason for 1 star... As I was balancing my checkbook, I saw there was a debit accorded to Brother Refresh program. I was on the phone (you couldn't chat about this matter, because I tried that first) for over an hour and 50 minutes! What was this charge for? So, here's my warning: The "FREE" trial for the Refresh program isn't really free at all. Apparently, they somehow keep track of the number of pages you print out and if you go over their specified number, they charge you FOR EACH ADDITIONAL PAGE! Apparently, I went over and was charged $25, plus tax. Okay... So I immediately said I want to cancel my "free" trial and asked for a refund of the amount charged to me.I have no complaints about the gentleman who I spoke with, although he had to go back and forth so much to figure out what the issue was. And apparently, they have a rule that the rep has to come on every 2 minutes to say he is working o the problem and would I mind allowing him another 2 minutes. I told him not to waste that time, that I would trust that he was trying to resolve things, but I guess it's protocol. So, after all that time, after explaining that I printed too many pages over and over (which I understood the first time), he said that they will not refund the charge. I asked to be transferred to someone who was in the department who handles the charge specifically, but he said he had to handle it.So, I wanted to know why, when I bought the printer AND the toner (and the paper, of course), and did NOT want the "free" trial, I was getting charged for the extra pages. Brother gave me nothing! The rep just kept repeating the fact that I printed too many pages. He couldn't seem to understand that it shouldn't matter as Brother had not given me anything in return for that charge. He said it was because I still had 30% of my toner left and they don't send it out until it's lower. I told him they aren't going to be sending the toner because I CANCELLED THE FREE PROGRAM! So why don't the refund me?! He didn't seem to understand... again, just repeated numerous times that I printed extra pages. Oh my goodness!Just to clarify, I was pleasant to him the entire time and assured him that I understood this wasn't his fault, etc. I apologized if I sounded frustrated toward the end of the call, although I wasn;'t shouting or anything... just trying to explain.I'm extremely frustrated and will try again another day to speak with someone who can understand that I have a problem with paying for a "free" service that I never benefited from. I just caution anyone who decides to purchase this or any other of Brother's printers that offer the Refresh program. Maybe others will appreciate it, but not me. At the time I bought the printer, I also bought replacement toner. And I certainly don't need anyone monitoring how many pages I print. Totally invasive! Unfortunately, I had my grandson set the printer up and link it to the computer. He apparently entered my information, thinking it was something he needed to do. He's a teenager. My bad, but the free trial is BS.

Great for ChromeBooks. Annoying to put the password in, however.
I bought this for my father's Chrome Book. It was easy to set up, except for putting in the network password. You have to push up and down to select the correct character (and capital letters matter!). Once the password was put it, it was extremely easy to finish the setup.

MUST READ IF YOU WANT TO BUY
Maybe the worst case of software extortion I have ever seen. This is a decent little printer that prints incredibly quick and super fast and it’s light and compact. It has a really irritating tiny LCD screen that is not backlit and almost impossible to see. I believe this is to encourage you to use the app configuration. Once you install the app or the Brother software, you’re doomed and you are entering the world of Tony Sopranos selling printers with extortion protection and basically penalties if you don’t do exactly what they want to do. There’s also a lot of forced advertising and really annoying alerts that cannot be opted out of. Also it will phone home and brick your printer if you don’t follow their commands.BUTIf you are a skilled IT person or have a decent experience, you can directly install the printer by IP address and the driver.inf (works for older windows too) and know how to run a small printer server on your PC for android and Apple devices, you can completely bypass ALL of the Brother extortionware that will haunt you until the end of time. (DO NOT INSTALL ANY OF THE BROTHER SOFTWARE FOR ANY REASON). Now, the only thing you’ll need to do is find a source of toner chips that will let you run the cartridges until they are actually empty rather than allow it to brick your toner after a certain amount of time or print count.Printing is basically organized crime and we all are the victims. This is a decent machine provided your can avoid the software henchmen. Make sure it will not phone home and start initiating firmware updates and install applications against your will, etc. so you definitely need to make sure your firewall is up-to-date and blocking Brother servers. Because once the Brother software is in control of your computer or the printer, you’re pretty much helpless at that point and Tony Soprano is come heavy with you in your sights.
