Q: How does this version differ from the Kickstarter edition?

Hello! There is no significant difference between the kickstarter version of the game and the “retail” version. The original kickstarter edition came with additional promo cards as part of backing the kickstarter campaign. Hope this answers your question!

Q: does this version come with cardboard or wooden animal tokens?

I ordered this game from Amazon. Not the kick starter version, just retail, and the animal tokens are wood.

Q: Would it be possible to play the game over Zoom if both parties had the game? We like to play games that way with family out of state

You could do this. It could be a bit annoying though as one person would have to have all the tiles to choose on their screen. They would also need to refill these choices. Any time another player chose a tile, they would have to search through their tiles to find the matching tile to place on their table. Alternatively, you could just set up everything on one person's screen, but then everyone would have to communicate the exact placement of each tile and animal, which could get annoying. I've played Carcassonne like this before and while it's certainly preferable to play all together it does work. Alternatively, if everyone has Steam, this game is well scripted in TableTop Simulator.

Q: How easy would this be to scale up to 5 players?

If you had multiple copies I think it could work, but i wouldn't just cut down on the number of turns a player could take by playing 5 players on 1 copy of the game. Some strategies would become markedly less viable if you don't have a full 20 turns.
