Q: Do you need to buy Hive Radiator Thermostats with this?

In a word..... No. We have ordinary radiator valves in some rooms and some normal thermostatic valves in others. The hive controller will control the heating on and off depending on the temp of the room it is located. The only difference to a normal room stat/controller is that you can control the heating remotely via the various apps. The standard thermostatic valves will shut down individual rooms when the temp in them reaches the required temp. What a standard thermostatic valve cannot do is turn the heating on, when that room requires heat, if the temp of the room with the main Hive unit is in does not require heating. The only way the hive (SMART) radiator valves would work correctly is if every radiator in the house is fitted with them. Then, if only one room needed more heat it would send a signal to the controller to fire up the heating, whilst every other radiator valve on the system is shut, hence sending heat to that one radiator/room only. It depends on how much control you want over your heating system. As most homes keep internal doors open most of the time, the warm air circulates around the house naturally and it really makes thermostatic valves ineffective. We have them in the bedrooms where we keep doors shut and can have different temps in the bedrooms compared to the main house.

Q: Which version is my thermostat. It’s the hot water and conventional hive, how do I know what version I have purchased ?

On my Thermostat I have Hot Water & Heating. If you have a Combi Boiler then you will not have a hot water tank and you only need to have the heating on your thermostat. Hope that helps. If in doubt suggest you call BG and ask their advice.

Q: Is this a volt free thermostat?

The heating and hot water version has a 2 channel receiver which is all 230v as far as I understand. There is a hard-wired 230v common connected to each of the switch terminals on the receiver. The heating only version has a single channel receiver which allows you to wire in the common voltage that you would like so I guess that’s the one suited to zero volt applications. NB I’m not an electrician but I researched and wired my one of these and this is how I understand it to be.

Yes, but you would need the receiver (not a hub) wired to your boiler.
