Have a Question? See What Others Asked

This looks identical to a discontinued model I have some questions: 1) Is the shoe steel? (or aluminum..coated with teflon),
Has anyone purchased this to adhere covering such as monokite, ultrocote etc., when building or repairing a rc (remote control) airplane?
Exactly how wide is the iron's "foot"? I need to apply veneer to the bottom of a relatively narrow channel.
what is the warranty? i bought this iron a few months ago and it will not heat-up.

If you’re looking for a veneer iron, this is perfect.

My last veneer iron died and I replaced it. I immediately used it and it worked perfect perfectly. I like the display which is much better than what I had before. I don’t see how they can do better.

Limitations and Workarounds for Model Airplane Covering Use

Using a IR thermometer, I discovered that, while the covering iron temp reading is actually extremely accurate when preheated and sitting on the stand, it cools down by as much as 10-20 degrees F when used on sheeting or plywood (i.e. a fuselage or the leading edge sheeted surface of a wing), then overshoots the target temp by about the same amount when allowed to heat up again. The iron doesn't really have enough "thermal mass" to stay hot throughout a covering operation and when it heats back up again, the temp distribution is uneven since the heating element doesn't contact the whole iron surface. You could get around all these problems by slowing down and not cooling the iron off as much, which is what I did to get acceptable results, but I'll be buying a 'dumb' iron for future projects. Ultracote (or at least the one roll of white I have) will shrink slightly at 220 F and gets really sticky already at that temperature, so if the iron didn't have 'quench' issues, I'd set it to 210 or so. Your mileage may vary.Ultracote's shrinking properties are such that, once it has been exposed to a certain temperature, it won't shrink again until it gets hotter. This means that the temperature oscillating behavior is also frustrating for the final bonding to surface and shrinking out wrinkles operations. As with the initial tack down process, the key is to use the iron in such as way as to not suck too much heat from it. The iron was able to achieve the temperature required for this (250-300 F and above), but after a while the LCD starts to overheat and turn black until it cools off again.Covering irons for RC plane use are getting hard to find and this product is up to the task IF you know how to use it.

Quality little iron

We use item for our airplanes and it is so nice to have the digital readout and simple push button temperature adjustment. Comes with a little wire stand and again works fantastic!!

Works awesome!!

Hey guys, Ifly RC planes and wings for combat, this iron works great for ceiling the laminate at 190°F and it gets up easily to 350°F for the Monaocote ceiling film that goes over the wood wings and the Balsawood fuselagesOriginally I ordered one that was like old-school with the potentiometer pot on the top of the iron but the last one I bought it was defective in the box so I gave this one a shot and I love it work perfect straight out of the box it even came with a sock can’t beat that best iron I’ve ever had!!

Useless, stick with an iron and a heat gun

I'm a cabinet maker and have a large industrial edge banding machine, but sometimes need to edge band manually on small parts and curved edges and thought this would be a great solution for that due to its small size. After five minutes of use I knew this tool was not going to work.I tried gluing some banding onto a short, straight piece. With the iron at full temperature I started applying pressure and at first it was working fine. By the end of the piece (about 12 inches) the glue was not adhering. I looked down at the display and saw the temperature had dropped by over 30 degrees and it took a long time to get back up to max temperature. Unacceptable.Ok, maybe this head will work OK on small curved edges? I give it a try, and find the same problem. Back in the box it goes.Do yourself a favor, get a 20 dollar Sunbeam iron which will hold temperature on anything that is straight, and a cheap heat gun for curved edges. I use painters tape to hold the banding onto the curves, hit it for 10 seconds with the heat gun, then press it down with my fingers and a bit of shop towel (so my little fingers don't get burned!)

Perfect tool

This tool is well worth the money. Does it's job for laminating edge wood skin with self adhesive. Professional results.
