Night in the Country

Catches the Mood of Night Time
I love it! This picture book was a recommendation from an Amazon booklist; the description made me curious because we live in the country, too (in Australia). The whole atmosphere of this book is wonderful - it quietly describes a dark country night to your child so gently that it takes away the childly fear of darkness and the creaking noises of an old country house at night! You can visualise the apple falling from the tree in the orchard, and I loved the mention of the squeaky screendoor from the neighbour's place as well. Except for the racoon (which I change into a wombat when I read it to my son) everything applies so much to anywhere country all over the world. This book is a loving description of life in the country, and I recommend it for all parents who live on a rural property. I'd suggest from about 3 years of age if your child is worried about darkness or night sounds; but even our 9 months old son already loves the quiet mood of this book which helps him wind down and fall asleep really easy.

Night in the Country by Cynthia Rylant, Author; Mary Szilagyi, Illustrator
I bought this when my son was very little. We lived in a BIG CITY at the time and it was actually one of his favorites. So I decided to see if I could find it for my sis's Great Granddaughter. I'm thrilled I was able to! She too, lives in a BIG CITY, so I think she will love it as well! Illustrations are just gorgeous! If you are lucky enough to find this book in superb shape then snap it up, because it is definitely one worth owning. Excerpt: "There are frogs. Night frogs who sing songs for you every night: reek reek reek reek. Night songs."Just Beautiful!

Fun childrens book
I live in the beautiful country in Nebraska. I bought this for a friends child. I loved it as much as her little girl Megan. This book shows the country as I know it. I would be interested to know how city children would respond to this book.

If you love animals and teach compassion, DON'T buy this book!
I'm so disappointed. We have several books by Cynthia Rylant that have loving, humane depictions of animals...so imagine our shock upon finding an old dog on a chain in the middle of this one! To portray a dog living alone on a chain is disgraceful, and I feel betrayed that the author of "Dog Heaven" would normalize this in a children's book. Aside from that, most "country" dogs are running loose around the farm anyway - not living life on a chain. From someone who rescues dogs from conditions like these on a regular basis, and tries to teach her children compassion for all living things, I am saddened by this book. If you care as much as I do about animals and children, and about teaching compassion...please don't buy this book. There are so many wonderful books with a similar storyline and no animal cruelty. Try "Midnight Farm" or the classic "Big Red Barn".

Simple and sweet
This is a sweet story, simple and short, reminding children to listen to the sounds that come from the quiet of nighttime, understanding what life is going on in that quiet darkness. Appreciating its beauty. The illustrations are soft, pastel-like and convey a peaceful feeling.

Bought this for our daughter and my husband and I love it! The story is wonderful and the artwork is just beautiful! I would suggest getting this for any child but especially those who live in the country.

アメリカ人が奏でるセレナーデ♪
Cynthia Rylantは、Henry and Mudge,Mr.
