Q: I bought this cable to record audio from external audio source (iPod, mixing board) directo to phone. It does not work. Is this just to use with mics?

Not sure. I only use it with a shotgun mic with iPhone or iPad

Its like a normal 90° head phone jack. I dont use it with my phone case on. The phone case is more weight.

So far it works with all the 3.5 mm ports i used.... so i wpuld think so

The 3.5 TRS (3Pole) plug is configured for microphones (input). The 3.5mm TRRS can be connected to an iPhone. I'm not sure if we answered your question.
