What you need to know

I've had this unit for a couple of weeks and I tore right into doing as much as I could with it. Here's a rundown of what you might want to know ahead of time.1) The software available off the shelf is serviceable. The app store is decidedly lacking in a choices, but there is generally something there to get you up and going in most of the areas you might be concerned with. After that, you will need to move to step 2.2) You will need to learn/know Docker, full stop. If you can't, you're gonna have a bad time. Probably a lot of the stuff you want to do is in Docker containers. Getting them to run is a mess. I don't know Docker, I'm having a bad time. Don't be like me.3) You can get in with puTTY and set up and run things but you will need to do more to get them to run outside of the account you log in with. I installed OpenJDK from Docker, then went in to the NAS through puTTY and set up a Minecraft server to see how well that would work and it runs great as long as the puTTY connection stays open. I'll be working on getting that to be permanent next.4) I put 32gb of ram in mine. Here is the exact set of sticks: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08C511GQH?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1The machine did complain and beep as loud as it could when I rebooted, which prompted me to shut it down and put a dot of hot glue over the buzzer hole, reboot, go into bios, save settings, reboot, and it booted right up after that. Don't be alarmed by the urgent beeping.5) You cannot build more than one array at a time, so if you fill this thing with 12 20tb drives in 6 sets of raid 1, you will be building arrays 6 times non-concurrently at over a full day each. Plan accordingly. In fact, you can't do anything while anything is happening to any array. If it is syncing, that's what its going to be doing until done, you cannot do any other disk operations until that is over.6) I put 2 solid state drives in raid 1, 1tb drives, and it took a very long time to build that 1tb array for some reason. I think it's that they are cheap ones and once the write cache ran out they run at somewhere around 15MB per second, very slow. Make sure you buy good ssd drives if you need high sustained write speed for large files.7) The only text editor I could find in the OS was Vi, so crack out that ancient command reference if you plan on doing any file editing in the OS. At least, until you get something else built to take its place.8) If the unit tells you it will take the disks offline to do an operation, be prepared for it to also disappear from the network for longer than you expect while it is doing magic disk stuff. So, if you are technically proficient in at least Linux, you should be able to get some stuff together and running on this NAS outside of what it comes with. I do wonder, though, if OS updates will wipe out any work you put into modifying files on the OS. Other than that, learn Docker. I like the machine.

good price

This was easy to deploy, running as my Plex server and local backups.

Good, but not great.

Media server:Using the Terra-Master drive calculator, it indicated I should have 72 TB. Once the drives were installed, it shows only 60 TB and initialized and formatted, 55 TB. The 2 odd sized drives weren’t even added to the storage pool.Once the drives were selected, it pops up a notification, it will take 322 minutes to initialize. My trust calculator says 322 minutes is basically 5.5 hours. 26 hours later, the initialization process is at 95% complete. I think Terra-Master uses a “standard” notification message. My other NAS had 2 6TB and 2 4TB drives. It also gave the same exact message. Must be impossible to add a proper calculation formula to the system to calculate how long it’s going to take. FYI, it took 8 hours of the 322 minutes.I’m hoping after this initialization process is completed, that I can add the 2 odd sized drives. Or, worse case, make a separate drive pool.Storage capacity:holds 6 drives

Does the job

This unit is backing up a RAID5 array and has 70TB usable / 88 TB gross. I'm using the TRAID setup because it gives me RAID5 with less overhead. I will say after trying all the Terrmaster backup options, it was easier and faster just to use Robocopy and Task Scheduler in Windows Server 2019 to create a mirror of my array. Really easy to setup and just like any large raid, expect initialization to take days. The only irritating thing is after a power interruption the unit has no auto on capability so I have to start it manually. Not difficult but inconvenient.

Good NAS and works

What I like about it- It's compact- Comes with TOS 5 - (was easy to update OS)- Upgraded easily to 32G RAM w/ no issues (TEAMGROUP Elite DDR4 32GB Kit)- TOS could've been better, but for the price and capabilities, it's a great NAS.- I tested Unraid, TrueNas, and Windows 11! all work great as an OS alternative. (Maybe not windows as much)- Using Plex, I could max about 4-5 streams with (HW transcoding) and 5-8 with direct streaming. Testing in all OS. *Note: This will depend on the bitrate video file size so yours may vary.

Spyware

I don’t like the. Entrusive spyware that the device runs in the background. Not sure why an internal network storage device would need to report back to a source the activity it has had on my network. Just not a kosher thing to do. Seems like a security violation on a secured network if you ask me. Anyway. I would not waste my good earned money on this one. It is compromised.

One DOA, One Working

The first one I unboxed would not boot. After 3 hours of troubleshooting and trying to follow the limited support found on the Terramaster site. Hooking up a monitor showed that the unit was having a Kernel Panic. I decided since it was brand new I did not want to email back and forth and returmed the unit. Unfortunately, no replacement was available and as of writing this they removed this model from Amazon. The 2nd unit is working perfectly. Easy to setup. I would rate it 5 stars if I had bought one and received this one.

NAS (Network Awesome Storage)

This TerraMaster T6-423 was the answer to my storage needs, and will be for a long, long time. The ease of setup and use, as well as its massive storage capacity (6 bays, up to 20TB per bay) were perfect. And look how attractive the unit it. You can proudly display it on your desktop you'd like. Great NAS solution!
