Great book re: growing up, elders growing old and the joys of community
This book from veteran author Henkes hits all the right notes in a deceptively simple story about a only-child daughter who vacations with her parents in Florida every year. Every year she has the same routines (including her birthday), but this year is different for many reasons, not the least is her growing awareness of the lives and feelings of those around her. How the protagonist navigates the changes in structure/relationships of her small close-knit vacation community is deftly told. Also, it's a great story narrated by an interesting protagonist who gives us a look into the inner world of a young person as she makes sense of herself and her place in her family and community. Highly recommended.

This was a very sweet coming-of-age story dealing with change and disappointed expectations
This was a very sweet coming-of-age story dealing with change and disappointed expectations. It was simply written yet delivers a strong message about acceptance and flexibility. Recommended for fourth grade and up.

Great book!
My ten-year old loved this book! She really "got into" the story -- so much so, she wants us to go to FLA for vacation.

It is one the best books I have read
It is different from most other books I have read. It showed how to be mature and also to set examples.
