Beautiful finish, but watch your nozzles

My wife won’t let me buy any other filament for her prints. She paints them using tabletop miniature paints and loves the texture and how it holds on to the paint. I think it looks great straight off the printer. I use a PEI covering a magnetic steel plate, but if I let the print sit till everything is room temp I don’t need anything but to tap it and it comes right off. Don’t have a problem getting it to adhere either, just print with normal PLA settings. But, this filament absolutely hungers for brass nozzles. I got a new Ender3 with the Sprite extruder. I printed about 1/4 a roll of ABS before this, so relatively new nozzle going in. Printed 2 relatively large busts, taking up 65-80% roll each, in a row. We set up Cura on her computer and decided to try a smaller print to test her settings. Could not get the first layer to adhere for anything. Finally, I extruded about 2cm and used calipers to measure the width. .57mm on what was supposed to be a .4mm nozzle. That’s almost 50% gain. Printing with that size of nozzle when you sliced for .4 won’t extrude enough filament to adhere, and I’d be surprised if it didn’t cause delamination or other under-extrusion problems. Replacing the nozzle with a fresh .4 one, and verifying that what’s coming out is actually .4mm fixed all my problems. If you don’t have a hardened nozzle, have some extras on hand when printing this filament, it WILL eat them, and fast. But if you can get a hardened nozzle, do it. You’ll save yourself some headaches.

Pay attention to the layer direction

Definately pay attention to the reccomended temperture on the label. Regular Hatchbox in my experience likes to run around 200-205. I've found the best performance from this matte around 210-215.On the upside, it looks great. Matte as described, and as another reviewer said the layer lines blend in very nicely. Downside, it's quite weak along the layer lines. If you want to do anything structural with this, pay attention to the layer direction and orient the stresses against them.Just don't be expecting this to be a general-purpose filament. It will do compressive loads well, but that adhesion will get you.

Nice stuff with caveats

I'm printing a 1/10 RC Dodge Challenger (DukeDoks) and I thought the accents (light frames, grilles, side skirts, etc.) would look great with the Matte Black. They do, but I have come across a couple things using this material I'll pass along.Use a clean glass bed to print on. I tried a couple parts with my usual Aqua Net hair spray and I damaged a couple parts just trying to get them off. I was stunned how firmly they were attached to the glass. I was afraid I was going to break the glass getting them off. I did try putting the glass in the fridge for 15 minutes but even that didn't help.Let the bed cool COMPLETELY on it's own before attempting removal. I'm talking a good hour or even overnight. Check to see if at least part of your print may be loose enough that you can get a thin spatula underneath to start working the piece off the bed. Go slowly and carefully. This material is softer than regular PLA and will deform easily. If nothing is loose, use a single sided razor blade and start at a corner to try and get it started. Again, work slowly and carefully.Watch out for layer adhesion. I did my parts in 0.1mm layers. I tried a gentle tap with a rubber gripped screwdriver when I couldn't just lift them off (this was with hair spray on the bed) and got a clean break in the middle of the part. I was running at 220°C with a 65°C bed and this rather surprised me. I haven't tried a higher nozzle temp yet or thicker layers yet to see if that helps with layer adhesion. So far, I'm very happy with the look of the parts. Very clean and the layer lines are so much less visible than regular black Hatchbox PLA.I'm a long time user of Hatchbox PLA. Seems to run the best of all the brand's I've tried in my printer. This Matte Black is worth a try if you have need of the appearance of matte finish on your part.Good luck!

Great first order from potential new fav company

A little tough to stick to the bed. Needed a spotless glass. Prob related to the sheen flatteners. Not a problem. Though I wouldnt call this a navy. It feels pretty light. Like a gray-blue. Still beautiful if this pic uploads you may get to see! Will def buy other matte spools from Hatchbox in the future.

Easiest filament to print with. Great results every time.

I use 200 degrees for the hot end and 60 degrees for the bed on my Ender 3. Extremely consistent, rarely fails.

Just a little soft

The main issue I’m having with matte filament from hatchbox, is that it’s so soft that it crumbles and won’t feed sometimes. The wheel just rips it apart instead of pulling it.When it’s successful, it’s a very nice printClean looking

Prints easily. Great looking result.

I used this to print a set of numbers that need to be read from far away. They turned out a nice bright (but not shiny) white color. The finish is not super smooth, but instead kind of like powder coated metal. It was just about perfect for what I was trying to make. The filament printed easily at 205 with a 60 degree bed. That's what I've been printing pla at in general, so whatever pla settings work for you will probably work with this filament.I had no moisture problems with this filament, and I'm frankly pretty bad about handling moisture.Basically this stuff was pretty foolproof and have a very nice looking result.
