I have been in electronics for over 45 years. It was always common knowledge that an amp clamp could only be used for AC. Recent advancements in technology now allow for an amp clamp that will measure DC current. One example of a field that uses this are the automobile diagnostics techs to measure battery current draw when the engine and ignition are off. This function is used to find parasitic current draws on the battery without being invasive. A meter that is an example of the DC clamp is KAIWEETS HT208D. There are several meters that now have this ability to measure DC current with the clamp. So although this meter does not have the ability, the question was a good one.

Q: I am in need of a meter that will display watts consumed measuring a 277v. interior light fixture. Will this meter display watts?

You can use the meter to measure the line voltage feeding the lamp socket and the amperage that is being utilized by the lamp when it’s in the socket and turned on per usual operation. Multipy your voltage reading by your amperage reading and the resulting figure is a close approximation of the watts consumed by the lamp when it’s turned on. Look up Ohm’s Law Formuls on Google and find a basic tutorial on using the Ohm’s law formula (I=VxR where I=Amps, V=Volts & R=Resistance). There are a number of useful versions of the equation that will allow one to calculate various electrical values with the data supplied by the multimeter.

Bought this meter for when I work on oil burners, since I don't need anything fancy. It works great but is not as nice as other meters I have. It would be a great first meter for a new tech or a cheap backup meter.

This tool is great to have when you are doing HVAC tune ups and it’s very accurate when getting readings, that pop up in seconds. It comes with a nice little pouch to store it in and it comes with alligator clamps for when you need to get readings on live wirings or plugs.
