Nice knife for a low price

This is a pretty nice knife with a nice leather sheath. It came pretty sharp but after running it through my work sharp sharpener, now it’s sticky sharp lol. Very comfortable handle and a solid feeling full tang toughness. Can’t wait to put this knife through a good weekend test with cutting steaks, veggies, cheese, salami some lite whittling. Going to use and abuse it for couple weeks then see how the sharpening goes from a very dull blade.

Makes An Excellent Chuck Wagon Blade!

Love this Schrade blade design. I have a smaller, more medium-sized one and another just a little smaller still. But this larger one is very versatile, like I said, i love the design. It's used on camp-outs for cutting meat for grilling, with its pseudo-cleaver shape and very sharp edge, or as a utility knife for cutting up veggies, cooked meats, etc. As you might expect with the price, it will lose its edge sooner than your US-made Case or Buck, but it's nice steel and sharpens easily. I think the trick to keeping the brand-new sharp is to sharpen/hone it often and regularly. I do that after almost every trip. I suppose it'll wear a little faster but it's easy to keep it brand-new sharp all the time that way. Otherwise, I'm very satisfied with the handle and its construction, the size, feel and balance are great, and the blade is strong and stiff, even if a little thinner than you'd like, The sheath is well constructed and sized right but I can't speak for it's durability if you carry it daily. Mine stays in the camp mess box - makes an excellent block knife!

Another Decent Schrade Knife.

This is another Schrade classic that's been around for a long time. Though these are no longer made in the US (and no longer made with Carbon steel) they are still decently made and a good buy for the price. The sweeping blade edge and point make these excellent for dressing, skinning and quartering large game. My uncle had an original that he carried with him all the time while hunting. It was his favorite game knife. The blade is nice and thick, just right for this type of knife. With a finger notch and thumb jimping to ensure you can control this blade pretty well when performing such tasks. The Delrin handle material is the same type Schrade has been using for years and should last a lifetime. I have 35+ year old Schrades with this same handle material and they haven't shown any signs of breaking or chipping (though some have worn down some). The knife is decently balanced for this type of knife and feels good in the hand. Now for the blade steel. Taylor brands, as well as other knife reviewers, like to list the steel as the equivalent of 440C. However this is incorrect. Taylor Brands site lists the blade material as 7Cr17. If you go a site like A.G. Russell Knives (they have a comprehensive list of the various steels used in knife making), you will see that 7Cr17 is actually almost identical in composition as 440A. 440A has about half the carbon content as 440C. They would need to use 9Cr18 to be closer to 440C. So this to me is a little misleading. However, 440A is still not a bad steel to use in such a knife and I find it takes an edge fairly easy as well as holds the edge fairly well. It's not the better 440C, but for the price of this knife, the steel is decent. The sheath is likewise, fairly decent, but again, for the price of this knife it's expected. Overall this is a decent game knife for this price. If you are looking for a decent knife of this type that you don't want to worry about breaking or losing out in the field, for this price, this is a knife for you.

Quality, affordable all purpose fixed blade knife

I have owned several of the smaller "sharpfinger" skinning knives over the years and always found them to be good quality, functional, and a real bargain. After ordering and receiving the larger "deer-slayer" version I was very pleasantly surprised. It arrived with arm shaving sharpness and a nice fit and finish. The sheath is of surprisingly good quality and construction. Considering the price point and quality, for a great design, balance, and functionality, I can't see why anyone could ask for more at this price. I have many much more expensive fixed blade "skinners" but I doubt you can find a better tool for the price.

Tremendous Knife for the Price

Purchased this knife as a gift for a Deer Hunter friend then another for myself after I saw what a great knife it is. It's an excellent Value. For the price I didn't expect as much as I got. The knife is well balanced, light to carry, and not so bulky or heavy to carry. The leather sheath is thick leather and very well made. The blade is sharp and seems to hold an edge very well. The sheath is actually a little darker than the image shows and I like that deeper reddish brown color. Schrade of course is an old name and they make many different knives. The knife is an excellent value for less than $25.

Balance is excellent, metal is good quality and came very sharp

I know that the main "complaint" about this item tends to be that they are no longer the original made in the USA versions. I have to say that the current China made version by Taylor is both functional, and well made. Balance is excellent, metal is good quality and came very sharp. It took almost no effort to get it scary sharp. As for the complaints about quality of the leather I suspect that the problem is because the leather has not been treated after being "wet formed" around a mold. The weather soaked up some leather treatment I had and became noticeable more supple, and flexible. All in all a great knife, and a good sheath.

good

This is a very good quality knife for the price, much better quality than 10 years ago.Made in China, but it is good.It stays sharp for a long time and is easy to sharpen.

It's always on my hip.

Its my work hours on the farm. It looks great and feels good in the hand. Holds an edge pretty good. I've only sharpened it once.
